What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship is an employer-driven, “earn while you learn” model that combines paid, on-the-job training, with job-related academic instruction that prepares apprentices with the skills needed to advance their chosen trade. Apprenticeship is a proven approach for preparing workers for jobs, while meeting the needs of business for a highly-skilled workforce.

About Our Program

The Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) offers apprenticeship training programs at seven locations across the state, with courses available both online and in person. These programs are open to both registered and non-registered apprentices, and CTECS provides affordable tuition compared to many other schools. If you’re not a registered apprentice, you can still take classes as an extension student. You can use the course credit toward future apprenticeship requirements, or simply take a class to learn something new. Students under 18 must have a parent’s permission to enroll.

CTECS delivers the classroom, or related instruction, portion of apprenticeship training. These are the hours required to qualify for a license in your trade. However, apprentices are still responsible for completing hands-on, on-the-job training with an employer sponsor. Students who complete all required classes for their license category will graduate with:

  • All the classroom hours needed for their trade
  • The skills and knowledge required to get licensed by the CT Department of Consumer Protection

All CTECS coursework is approved by the State of Connecticut. We work closely with the CT Department of Labor’s Office of Apprenticeship Training and the Department of Consumer Protection to make sure our programs meet both industry standards and state licensing requirements.

Program Information

Licensed Trade Areas

We provide related instruction for license categories in the following areas. Click on the trade area to view an information program packet.

In addition to licensed trades, CTECS also offers hands-on training in manufacturing at three locations: Bristol TEC, Kaynor Tech, and Norwich Tech. These in-person programs prepare students for entry-level jobs in the manufacturing industry. CTECS is fully approved to provide classroom (related instruction) training in non-licensed areas like manufacturing.

If you are a registered apprentice with a valid state apprentice ID card listing your current employer and are taking a state apprentice program class:

    • Tuition: $325 per in-person course; $345 for online course*
    • Non-refundable Registration and Technology Fee: $50

If you are a registered apprentice taking a course outside of your state apprentice program or are not a registered apprentice:

    • Tuition: $350 in-person course; $370 for online course*
    • Non-refundable Registration and Technology Fee: $50

We are now accepting online payments through ParentSquare, including credit cards, Apple Pay, and other electronic payment methods. There are no additional fees for students who choose to pay electronically. The cost to the student is the same regardless of whether payment is made online, by money order, or by bank check. After a registration request is submitted, an invoice will be generated within 24-48 hours. Once the invoice has been issued, payment can be made online through ParentSquare. Traditional payment methods, including money orders and bank checks, will continue to be accepted at the school location.

Certified bank checks or money orders are also accepted. No personal checks or cash will be accepted. Please make certified bank check or money orders payable to: Treasurer, State of Connecticut. An invoice may be printed during registration, and a receipt will be provided once payment is received.

*A $20 Tech Tutor fee applies to online classes. The Tech Tutor provides onboarding for new students and emergency technology support during classes.

To ensure timely processing of transcript requests, please submit your request September through June, when semesters are in session. Requests submitted outside of this timeframe may be delayed.
