  • Exploratory and Introduction to Automotive Collision Repair and Refinishing (CR110)

    Grade 9 · 3 Credits

    All Grade 9 students participate in the Exploratory Program. Students interested in Automotive Collision Repair and Refinishing are introduced to the fundamentals of shop safety, equipment identification, and proper tool usage. Students gain hands-on experience with collision repair and refinishing practices, including metal cutting, straightening, welding, bolt-on replacement panel installation, and panel alignment.

    Students also learn about hand tools, abrasives and their applications, fastener identification, and basic refinishing techniques through planned activities and projects designed to assess skill and aptitude. In addition, students explore the wide variety of careers available within the collision repair and refinishing industry. Technology-related mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary, science, and wiring diagram interpretation are integrated throughout the curriculum.


    Basic Collision Repair (CR210)

    Grade 10 · 3 Credits

    Students examine contemporary vehicle construction and develop repair strategies that ensure safe, high-quality, permanent repairs. Instruction includes repair procedures for minor damage on actual vehicle parts, fastener applications, metal cutting, welding, shaping, and panel straightening.

    Students learn proper body filler application, shaping, and finishing techniques while practicing on actual vehicle components. Compressed air systems and their components are explored, and students are introduced to automotive painting and refinishing processes, including primers, base coats, finish coats, and masking techniques.

    Safety practices, equipment identification, and proper tool usage continue to be emphasized throughout the course. Technology-related mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary, science, and wiring diagram interpretation are integrated throughout the curriculum.


    Collision Component Repair (CR310)

    Grade 11 · 3 Credits

    Students expand their painting and refinishing skills through complete vehicle refinishing projects using advanced masking techniques and multistage coatings. Additional instruction includes plastic component repair, advanced abrasive applications, fixed and movable glass replacement, and computerized estimating.

    Students perform customer repair work through in-school automotive repair projects that support classroom learning. Continued instruction emphasizes shop safety, equipment usage, and professional work habits. Students demonstrating acceptable proficiency may qualify for Work-Based Learning (WBL). Technology-related mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary, and science continue to be integrated throughout the curriculum.


    Advanced Collision Repair (CR410)

    Grade 12 · 3 Credits

    Students learn advanced collision repair techniques including perimeter, box, and unibody frame measurement, damage analysis, and structural repair. Frame measuring systems, steering and suspension diagnosis and repair, and weld-on and bonded panel installation are taught through classroom instruction and hands-on practice.

    Students also study collision shop business management, customer service, and professional workplace expectations while continuing to perform customer repair work through in-school projects. Instruction emphasizes safe work practices and entry-level job readiness, including completing job applications and participating in mock interviews.

    Students demonstrating acceptable proficiency may qualify for Work-Based Learning (WBL). Seniors complete several Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Student Certification exams, providing industry-recognized credentials. Technology-related mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary, science, and wiring diagram interpretation remain integrated throughout the curriculum.


    Industry Credentials & Career Pathways

    Students at all four grade levels are introduced to training materials and assessments from I-CAR (Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair), the industry's leading provider of continuing education for collision repair professionals. Students earn industry-recognized I-CAR credentials that demonstrate the technical skills developed throughout the Collision Repair program.

    Graduates of this program are prepared to pursue two-year or four-year degrees in automotive technology, mechanical engineering, or related fields. Students entering the workforce may find employment as collision repair technicians at independent repair facilities or automobile dealerships. Career opportunities also include damage estimating, vehicle appraisal, and manufacturing or production environments requiring painted or coated finished products.

  • Exploratory and Introduction to Automotive Technology (AU110)

    Grade 9 • 3 Credits

    All Grade 9 students participate in the Exploratory Program. Students deciding to enter the Automotive Technology field are introduced to the basics of safety, equipment identification and use, engine operation, construction and components, vehicle maintenance, and shop operation.

    This course allows students to experience a variety of automotive practices through demonstrations and instruction. Students learn about the many career opportunities available within the automotive industry. Engine design and construction are discussed and studied, and students gain experience with engine mechanical repairs and diagnosis.

    All eight areas of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Technician Service certification are covered throughout the four-year course of study. Technology-related mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary, science, and wiring diagram interpretation are integrated throughout the curriculum.


    Principles and Applications of Automotive Systems (AU210)

    Grade 10 • 3 Credits

    Students begin with a refresher on shop safety and proper hand-tool use. Major areas of study include engine mechanical systems, vehicle electrical and electronic systems, and brake systems.

    Students receive instruction and hands-on practice in diagnosing and repairing general electrical systems, batteries, starting systems, and charging systems. Hydraulic systems, drum and disc brake systems, power assist units, anti-lock brake systems (ABS), and traction control systems are also explored.

    Specific applications and repair procedures are discussed, practiced, and reinforced through hands-on learning. Students continue to receive instruction in safety requirements and demonstrate sound safety practices. Technology-related mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary, science, and wiring diagram interpretation are integrated throughout the curriculum.


    Diagnosis and Service of Automotive Systems (AU310)

    Grade 11 • 3 Credits

    Students diagnose and repair electrical components, lighting systems, instrumentation, wiper systems, chassis wiring, and vehicle accessories. Instruction also includes the diagnosis and repair of suspension and steering systems.

    Students learn two- and four-wheel alignment procedures as well as wheel and tire service and diagnosis. Expanded training in engine performance focuses on fuel systems, ignition systems, and computerized engine management systems.

    Students perform in-school automotive projects for customers while continuing to receive instruction in safety requirements and demonstrating sound safety practices. Students who reach an acceptable level of proficiency may be eligible for Work-Based Learning (WBL).

    Technology-related mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary, blueprint reading, science, and wiring diagram interpretation are integrated throughout the curriculum.


    Advanced Diagnostics and Repair of Automotive Systems and Emissions Control Systems (AU410)

    Grade 12 • 3 Credits

    Students continue to build upon their knowledge with in-depth training in engine management systems that affect vehicle emissions and performance. Air conditioning service, diagnosis, and repair are introduced and practiced, along with the principles of HVAC distribution systems.

    Students are introduced to diagnostic and repair procedures for automatic transmissions and transaxles, as well as manual drivetrains, clutches, and drive axles. Shop operation and customer satisfaction are also discussed and explored.

    Students continue to receive instruction in safety requirements and demonstrate sound safety practices while performing in-school automotive projects for customers. Students develop job-readiness skills, including completing job applications, participating in interviews, and demonstrating entry-level trade competencies.

    Students who reach an acceptable level of proficiency may be eligible for Work-Based Learning (WBL). Each senior takes several Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Student Certification exams, earning industry-recognized credentials.

    Technology-related mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary, science, and wiring diagram interpretation are integrated throughout the curriculum.


    Industry Credentials & Career Pathways

    Students at all four grade levels are exposed to an automotive curriculum fully aligned with standards established by the ASE Education Foundation, the industry-recognized accreditation organization for automotive technician training programs.

    Students who successfully complete this course of study may pursue two-year or four-year degrees in automotive technology, mechanical engineering, or related fields.     Additional career opportunities include service advisor, service writer, automotive parts specialist, and other positions within the automotive service industry.

    This course allows students to experience a variety of diesel and heavy equipment repair practices. Students learn about the many career opportunities available within the diesel and heavy equipment repair industry. Instruction includes the use of hand and power tools, with opportunities to develop and practice these skills in a shop environment.

    Students are also introduced to diesel engine operation and engine components. Technology-related mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary, science, and wiring diagram interpretation are integrated throughout the curriculum.


    Principles and Applications of Diesel Systems (DI210)

    Grade 10 · 3 Credits

    Students are introduced to the major systems found in on-road and off-road heavy equipment. Systems studied and hands-on activities are aligned with Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification areas.

    Areas of instruction include diesel engine systems and overhaul, drivetrain systems, brakes, electrical and electronic systems, and Preventive Maintenance Inspection (PMI). Students develop technical knowledge while applying industry-standard repair and maintenance practices.

    Students receive instruction in safety requirements and demonstrate sound safety practices. Technology-related mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary, science, and wiring diagram interpretation are integrated throughout the curriculum.


    Diagnosis and Service of Diesel Systems (DI310)

    Grade 11 · 3 Credits

    Students examine and practice the design, service, diagnosis, and repair of transmissions, differentials, rear axles, and brake systems. In-depth Preventive Maintenance Inspection (PMI) training is provided through both classroom instruction and hands-on application.

    Advanced steering systems, tire and wheel diagnosis, and service procedures are explored. Students service and repair electrical and electronic controls and systems, as well as hydraulic and air brake systems. Shop organization and management principles are also introduced.

    Students perform in-school diesel projects for customers that support curriculum objectives. Students receive instruction in safety requirements and demonstrate sound safety practices. Students reaching an acceptable level of proficiency may be eligible for Work-Based Learning (WBL).

    Technology-related mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary, science, and wiring diagram interpretation are integrated throughout the curriculum.


    Advanced Diagnostics and Repair of Diesel Systems, Emissions Control Systems and Engine Management Systems (DI410)

    Grade 12 · 3 Credits

    Students diagnose and repair engine and emissions control systems while developing advanced troubleshooting and repair skills. Instruction includes welding, oxy-acetylene welding, and cutting techniques.

    Additional topics include supplemental electronic systems, cold-weather starting systems, advanced engine repair procedures, advanced suspension system repairs, and hydraulic system service and repair. Students also study air conditioning and refrigeration systems, including the diagnosis and repair of common air conditioning and refrigeration issues.

    Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) fundamentals are introduced. Students continue to perform in-school diesel projects for customers that reinforce classroom instruction and industry practices.

    Students receive instruction in safety requirements and demonstrate sound safety practices. Students develop entry-level employability skills by completing job applications, participating in interviews, and demonstrating job-readiness competencies. Students reaching an acceptable level of proficiency may be eligible for Work-Based Learning (WBL).

    Each senior completes several Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Student Certification exams, earning industry-recognized credentials. Technology-related mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary, science, and wiring diagram interpretation are integrated throughout the curriculum.


    Industry Credentials & Career Pathways

    Students successfully completing this course of study may pursue two-year or four-year degrees in automotive technology, diesel technology, mechanical engineering, or related fields.
